The 2nd Unit plans are still available today for a pre-designed, economical solution to added income and helping to solve the low-cost housing need in the county. Most municipalities are receptive to the idea of 2nd units on single-family lots, generally with easing of planning requirements to achieve this end.
This website represents projects completed by Rushton-Chartock Architects. Richard Rushton and Arthur Chartock established the firm in 1976, to be joined later by partner Elizabeth Rubin. Over the years, the firm successfully completed hundreds of projects. These projects have been featured in several books and magazines such as "Better Homes and Gardens", "Remodel", "Outdoor Places" and "Country Style" by Time-Life Books. We have won design awards from the State of California, City of San Rafael, Town of Fairfax, the Pacific Coast Builders' Conference, and Mercy Charities Housing.
Rushton-Chartock Architects, a Marin County Residential Architectural firm, served the Bay Area since 1976. They specialized in residential work including new custom homes, residential remodels, affordable housing, multi-family, land planning, as well as commercial buildings. In 2019, with the retirement of partner Arthur Chartock, the partnership disbanded while Richard Rushton continues work as a sole proprietorship, Richard Rushton Architect.
